M4 flap settings

Post by Mog »

So I read some short little snips about an STC to increase the flaps on an M4 from 15/25 to 20/30. Is this an actual approved mod and if so what is actually involved. I researched this a bit and couldn't come up with anything solid. [/i]

Maule has the later ratchet. 30 mins to exchange and re rig flaps.
You get more flap deflection if you do not have the sliding gust lock mechanism which can be removed if you have it, but if you have the flap travel bridle cable, just move it along the hinge shaft.
Re bush the flap bell crank and replace its bolt to improve flap action also.

Early ratchet is 15/35 degrees
Late ratchet is 20/40 degrees
Occasionally it is said that a 20/40/45 is seen though the flap handle needs reinforcement.
Many flaps are not adjusted correctly so full deflections under air load are not achieved, thus those aircraft have a fast final approach speed.
With upward hand pressure the flap should be flush with bottom of wing.
There should be a rubber/fabric pad glued to rear spar which bell crank bottoms against.
Flap return springs should hold bellcrank against this pad.
Bellcrank should not move up and down on the pivot bolt, only swivel.
Do not use alignment with wing root fairings or wingtips to set baseline adjustment for flaps or ailerons, Use alignment with bottom wing skin.

is there a kit for this or do you just buy a few new parts to make this happen?

Mine has the three settings. Couldn't tell you what degree I'm getting for each except slow, slower, and slowest. Not sure how this is accomplished but maybe someone will chime in. Obvious the dog bone ratchet at the handle has three notches but I can't say how you get more flap travel.

If just upgrading ratchet, one small part.
If updating worn system then 1 bolt, 1 bushing, one rubber pad, one flap return Spring, for each side.
Off bypassing gust lock system on M5, remove a part. See page D 10 in parts manual.

Adjust flaps to bottom of wing then use protractor while placing upward pressure on flap.

I see I have the 15/30 flaps, they would not make 40 even without up pressure. Do any of you folks have a part number for the 20/40 flap notches for a M-4?

I sent Bryan at Maule an Email to sort out which part we need. I will post it once he responds.
