M6-235 purchase advice

Post by Jayson v Schalkwyk »

Hello all.

New member, living in South Africa. Fly for a living on a corporate jet and want to be more active in GA. I own a Bushbaby (think South African Kitfox) and it will soon be ready to fly after a refurb at the manufacturer. The plan is that this aircraft will give me a good platform to learn tailwheel flying but the long term goal is to end up with a 4 seat taildragger. I already have plans and some aluminum for a 4 place Bearhawk...

BUT...

I know of a 1983 M6-235 that is for sale through an EAA member. I have flown with him a few times in his Maule and enjoyed it each time. http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/showpho ... kt&cat=576

Here are the details of his plane for sale:

1983
Airframe 4135 TT
Engine 1635 SMOH engine had titan pistons and cylinders installed at 3767hrs
Prop 99 SMOH
CSU 99 SMOH
Fuel Injection 99 SMOH
Fuel Pump 99 SMOH
Magnetos 99 SMOH
X-ray for corrosion in September 2013

Equipment installed:
Garmin 340 Audio
nav/com 1 x King 750
ADF
KT76A txp
autopilot
garmin 296
EDM 700

From the bit I know, on paper this doesn't look bad at all. The only thing troubling me is the hours remaining to OH of the engine - about 365 or so. Our rand is depreciating quite badly at the moment here in South Africa compared to the US Dollar so the OH is not going to be cheap - probably around $22500. How does this compare to the USA? Having said that, he is asking the equivalent of $41300 which from what I have seen online seems very reasonable.

I would really appreciate any advice or feedback from you guys. I have seen there is LOADS of experience and knowledge on this forum.

Thanks in advance,

Jayson

If its as good as it reads and looks, grab it.
However, don't bypass the due diligence.

Thanks Jeremy.

I know it's tough to give advice on aircraft that you have not seen. With that spec sheet do you think it's a good buy? I will discuss with the owner about getting it to the South African Maule agents for a prebuy inspection. They not far from where the aircraft is based.

I have seen this aircraft has an additional scoop on the upper starboard engine cowling.

Any idea what this is for? I have not seen any other maule with this scoop.

Can you tell me anything in particular about the Titan pistons and cylinders. They were not installed that long ago and don't have many hours on the, so surely they shouldn't need any overhaul when the engine is new??

Many thanks again,

Jayson

This is the benefit of local knowledge. Thanks Chris!!

Could you suggest an unbiased AMO? I know that she has been maintained at Rand for the last few years. Would you advise of a different AMO?

Presumably that scoop is to help cool the oil cooler.
Though it looks slick, it must be a one time approval.
In the US we use a NACA scoop mounted in lower cowling just below the oil cooler.
The oil cooler is a different place on the carbureted versions.

I just spoke with Chris.

He also mentioned it was a cooling scoop for the fuel injection. It's not uncommon here in South Africa to have pretty warm ambient temps and at elevations common of around 5000amsl any extra air helps.

Thanks for the input.

Spot on Jeremy, once off approval done for 3 Maules
Constant problem is controlling heat on the injected lycoming engines

That M6 appears to still have the old style droop tips and thus smaller aileron and rudder. For $695 plus glueing on time for VGs the controls can be greatly enhanced. Or, there is a kit to replace tips, ailerons, and rudder and then add VGs also. Its only money!

Well, When Chris and I spoke it is one of the suggestions he made. Elevator gap seals and VG's. Here are a few more pics

Is the tab on the rudder a trim tab or servo tab. I saw in the forum that it has mixed views, some liking the fact that it helps in the turns and others hating it.

Credit to the photographer for his pics.
I am learning so much at the moment!

Servo tab attached to aileron control for anti adverse yaw in a rolling turn.
There is a separate yaw trim device.
The servo tab aids more than detracts from aircraft control.
Maule are relatively benign regarding spin entry partly because of the servo tab and partly because of aileron/rudder balance built into the design.
Lead with rudder in turns, or in any rolling maneuver like lifting a dropping wing. Use rudder, use rudder, use rudder.
Elevator gapseal is part of type cert except on M4 and M5.
It is a major aid in pitch control, besides not over trimming the elevator trim.

WOOOO HOOOO

Have finally made some progress and should be the proud owner of the M6 in the next few days. Am very excited to start this new chapter in light aircraft ownership, its joys and hopefully seldom pitfalls.

I will sure be bugging you guys for advice and questions.
