McCauley 201 82"

Post by Curtis »

Is anyone with a M4 running a 82" McCauley on a 220 Franklin?

Just got back from the airport. Mine is 82" on a franklin 220. A bit noisy on climbout but i dial it back to 25 squared on climbout.

Thanks, I know some people are running the c-201, 82" on Cessna 170's, 175's and I have been told that the performance is outstanding. Increase in everything from takeoff performance to cruise speed after switching from the old 22. What size tires are you using?

We ran a 82" on our M4 220 and it was great, you can have all the power in the world but if you can't transfer it to the air/water/ground it isn't going to do you any good.

As of now we are running 700's. Not too much in the way of back country strips here (san jose, CA); plus I am still getting used to the airplane. I have seen another franklin-powered Maule with a "skinny" prop. Any ideas about the length of that one?

As far as being "skinny" the prop is most likely a McCauley 22. They are relative "skinny" compared to a 201.

If my memory serves me right, I think the C201 is wider at it's narrowest point than the standard Maule 220 prop is at it's widest point.

201 prop

It's the C21 that is the skinny prop with the C22 being a big improvement and the 201 being even a bigger improvement but you have to be on 850's for the 201. Maulewaco went to a 201 on his M4220 with notable improvement and he has paperwork for that conversion.

Yes it is worth it.
By the way my old M4-220 is for sale on barnstormers. 27,900. Great buy for anyone wanting a power house maule. Looks like he put a new c22 prop on it and new sealed lift struts. It has a new PZL 150 hour engine on it. Needs paint. Look at the wing tips. They are not drooped. I ran 150-155 mph in that bird. It is simple and light. Add also say's will split engine and airframe. Hate to see it go to that. :(

I have the STC for a 78" 2A34C201-C/90DA-12 and bought a 2A34C201-C/90DCA-8. I thought it fit under the same STC, but I guess I was wrong.

How did you go about getting the correct paperwork?

Requires coordinated field approval using Stinson 220 conversion STC, Prop TCDS, and other previously approved installations as data. Makes a huge difference on the 220... If you have an IA available with good working relationship with FAA, is pretty straightforward process, requiring a Flight Manual Supplement as well and this requires ACO buy-in. You must run 8.50 or taller tires to allow for adequate prop clearance. For a small fee, I'd be willing to work with your local IA and I do have copies of previous approvals, and Flt manual supplement.

Not sure what the ACO buy-in is. How much does that cost?

I will have to talk to my IA and will probably contact you for further help. Or buy a Chinese tape measure, that option sounds pretty easy.

ACO is FAA Aircraft Certification Office, they're free... Coordinated field approval the FSDO sends to ACO Branch where they have engineering types to review mod and buy in, then they send back to FSDO... Just another layer of burueacracy. Either Chinese Tape Measure or a Tape Measure Stretcher works as well? It gets to be problematic when annual time comes around though, if IA is very thorough on his inspection... As it can jeopardize his licenses if for some reason feds realize what's on it..
