oil choice for PZL Franklin <40 Hrs

Post by Goomba »

I have still got breakin oil (shell100 50W) and usage was 1 qt over the last 4 hr, mostly patternwork. The plane had been getting little use since new install. For cold weather, the (1972) manual says 30Wt but I am questioning this...sheouldn't 20-50 be used? Anyone who has experience or is feeling qualified pls ahare thoughts. Thx Goomba

This sounds like a case for use of Philips XC 20/50 which also is used as break in oil

Just remember to get Philips 20W50 M. It is a multigrade mineral oil for break in.

the shell product would be Aeroshell 65, which is a straight mineral 30 weight. i have used this breaking in new engines to 20 below with good results.
the phillips 20w-50M would also be a good choice.

Phillips XC20w/50 AD oil is recommended, no need for straight mineral oil. See attached link for good article on the WHY's / WHY NOTS from ECI.... We've been using the phillips multi weight AD oil for breakins up here for years now, never had an engine didn't seat rings within 10 to 15hrs since? Also one of the largest engine shops in the state is who recommended the Phillips to us. Just don't add any additives such as Camguard, Lycoming Additive, or AvBlend until you have several hours and engine thoroughly broke in. I usually wait until 75 to 100 hours on engine, then recommend the Camguard treatment at every oil change. DON'T use any synthetic oils such as aeroshell 15w/50 for break in due to the additives, etc, etc...
