short term hangar rental

Post by Flyhound »

Help: Not exactly backcountry focused, but there will be elements of backcountry flying involved. I'm planning to fly my Maule from just north of Seattle to Ocean City, Maryland this summer to spend time with the kids and grandkids. Yes it would be cheaper to fly commercially, but then I'd miss all the adventures possible along the way. There will lots of airport camping in both directions with some bucket list stops, and I plan to catch AirVenture on the way back to the PNW. While in Ocean City, I'd REALLY like to hangar my plane from 7/18-7/22. Is there anyone in that general area that has hangar space they'd be willing to rent for those 5 days? I just want to concentrate on my time with the grandkids and not obsess over how my plane is doing if parked outside. I don't worry at all when I'm camped next to the plane, but leaving it outside and alone for 5 days gives me the heeby jeebies.

I don’t know of one but have flown in a few times. A really neat airport. From my distant observation it seems like a sleepy little place, maybe once you meet a few people the doors might open. Wish I had a more substantial lead.

Thanks - I actually got a reply from another website from a pilot hangared there. He got me in touch with the airport manager and he's trying to help. All the hangars are full, but someone based there might be away with their plane during the time I'm there. I have my fingers crossed.

Just curious: what is it exactly that you’re worried about with leaving the plane outside? Wind/weather? Theft/vandalism? I’m not familiar with the area; is there some specific hazard?

All of the above. Summer thunderstorms can do damage, especially if there is hail. It's a relatively sleepy area, but is close to major cities with attendant crime/theft issues. I put way too much into my panel to have somebody with a long allen wrench remove my avionics from their trays and walk away. The door locks on airplanes are more of a nuisance than an actual deterrent. Several planes parked outside at the sleepy airport I'm based at have been vandalized and one was stolen by a non-pilot who subsequently died when the plane crashed in the coastal mountains. My desire for a hangar when I'm not around the plane is just due diligence to minimize risks I can't otherwise control. Not getting a short-term hangar won't cancel my trip, but I'd be a lot more nervous while I am there.

If your route brings you near the four corners area then there's space for your Maule in my hangar (KCEZ) for a night or two. You are welcome any time!

Thanks Paul. It's too early to know what my actual routing will look like. I've tentatively planned a northern and a southern route in both directions. As I get close to the actual time, I'll make decisions based on where the least problematic weather seems to be. If I wind up flying through Colorado in either direction, I'll plan a stop for fuel and a meal if nothing else. If I do make it out your way, I hope our schedules cooperate...
