Hi all!
I'm getting to know my new-to-me early M-4 210 and was wondering how much oil to put in after an oil change. The plane doesn't have an oil filter.
Any other IO-210 tips would also be appreciated.

Hi Peter,
Congratulations on your M4-210.
The IO-360 I run is fed with 15w-50W Areroshell. I also tip in CamGuard, 14oz. if I recall. The engine takes 10-qts., but normally settles at7-8 qts., just spits out the rest.
I recently added the tempest oil filter assy., as the screen filter just didn’t seem adequate. The assembly mounts easily and may help extend engine life, but also to visually check at annual time when cutting open the filter.
(When changing your next oil, suggest pulling all plugs at back&bottom of engine to clean all debris left for you. 5+)
This way you can verify next oil change for any surprises.
Oil type is owner preference and flying type of conditions/ temperatures.

I also run about 7qts to keep a cleaner belly

I ran 7-8 quarts and for me it's Aeroshell in Continentals and Phillips in Lycomings.

Stick says 8 but call it full at 7 and add one when says 6. Aeroshell 15W-50. Add camguard for Lycomings.

My M5-210 is the first plane I've owned that I can run full at 10 quarts and it doesn't spit ANY out. It uses 1 quart in 25 hours and then I change it.
As for operations. Get yourself a engine monitor if you don't have one. I've caught 3 plugged injectors (I found the source and haven't had any since). Without the engine monitor I very well could have burn up those cylinders.
This engine is one of the best that was used in the M5. Smooth, super efficient, and powerful.

Lift the tail up to level flight attitude. Then check the oil level. There is a significant change in the O540 in my M5-235.
When I drain the oil to change, I get another pint or two.
MY assumption is Lycoming marked the dip stick for the engine in horizontal attitude, not 15 degreased nose up.

My O-360-C1F settles at 6.5 quarts of Aeroshell W100 Plus (warm weather) or W80 Plus (cold weather). I add a quart when it gets to 6 quarts or for a long flight. The "Plus" is for Camguard. For this engine Lycoming's engine operator manual says max oil consumption is .25 quarts per hour. I put a quart in about every 5-6 hours.
