I'll be flying down from Wisconsin! Leaving Thursday morning. My wife is still trying to decide if she is coming. She asked about restroom facilities? Showers for the campers? Excited to meet some other Maules owners.

Howdy,

I'm looking at coming down this year to the Annual Maule Gathering, as I passed last year at the last moment due to the storms coming up from Tx. Leaving on Tuesday the 21st. and would like to stop over in NC/SC for a night or two. Does anyone know a good place to stay over, camp out under the Wing in that area? How about Food/Airport sites, is BQ1 restaurant back in operation? What other options are in the area? Leaving Central NY with a M5-210C.

Anyone else from the Northeast making the trip?

Tom

BQ1 is not back in business and there is no info yet on if or when it will be rebuilt. N92 Laney's is a nice public grass airstrip not far from your flight path. You should call to see if they will allow camping on the field. There's skydiving on the weekends. Davidson County KEXX is in Lexington NC. Lot's of good barbecue there but you will need their crew car. Don't know about on-field camping. It's a paved airport. Shelby Cleveland County airport KEHO has a nice long grass strip beside the paved runway. Watch out for the VASI on the South end. The Flying Pig barbecue restaurant is in walking distance. Call about on-airport camping. My home base Foothills Regional Airport KMRN has a nice grass airstrip beside the paved runway. Don't know about camping under the wing though. Call first. No restaurants in walking distance but they have a crew car.

Thanks Andy,

With all the airstrips / airports in NC / SC, there must be more out there that have a restaurant type on field?
I know this last year most NY airfield restaurants shut down due to Covid’s restrictions.

Are there pancake breakfasts during the weekends at various airports? I know coming down during the week limits who’s open, but I would like to get some taste of the South’s food.

How about fly-in community airports? Any with restaurants?

Lake Ridge (8NC8) just north of Raleigh is a cool spot to visit also. All grass with an active community. I'm sure if you call ahead they'd be receptive to overnights, you wouldn't be the first. There are a number of really unique strips around the area too- some are private but if you link up with the right people you could make a day of it easily. Blue Ridge (MTV) is nearby and has an on site restaurant.

Cambridge, MD (CGE) might be on your route and has probably one of the best airport restaurants I've been to. Great seafood. And lots of variety if you're not into seafood.

HSE in the outer banks area is right on the beach and also beside a campground. I think some restaurants are close by. That whole area slows down after tourist season so you might want to call ahead and see what's open.

Rutherford airport (FQD) in western NC has a small little restaurant on field. GSP has an on-site restaurant.

Shealy airport (SC14) is high on my list of places to visit in SC. Near Columbia on Lake Murray.

I second the Lake Ridge 8NC8 and Blue Ridge KMTV recommendations. Camping on-field is unusual and you will have to get advance approval. KMTV has a really good restaurant in the terminal building but call ahead to make sure it's open. A lot of these restaurants have shorter hours or are only open certain days due to COVID. I live near KFQD and the little restaurant is okay but not great with limited hours. I like landing on grass and their grass is broken up with taxiways and lights. KEHO is near KFQD and has better grass and a nearby restaurant.

By any chance is there a CFI bringing a MXT-7-180 to the fly-in who would be willing to give me a checkout for insurance?

I know it's a long shot but I figured I'd ask.
Thanks
Mark

Similar question to Mark's. Is there a CFI going to the fly-in who would be able to squeeze in a BFR in my MX-180A, Friday afternoon or Saturday morning (yes, I know, it's a busy morning and afternoon, but still thought I'd ask)?

Leo if you can't get it done at the Factory Fly In, I should be able to help out if you fly up to the Waterbury Fly In in the other thread. I wish I was able to make to the Factory Fly In as well. Have fun.

Hi Greg, thanks, will hopefully make it to the Waterbury fly-in too, but have to do a BFR before then.
Thanks,
Leo
