M5 vs M7 wing performance
Just wondering if anyone has worked out relative performance differences (% or TO and landing distances) attributed to the M7 wing compared to the M5 wing i.e. a M5 180c compared with Mx7-180b, same weight, same field, same pilot, same conditions. I see some talk about cruise speeds and takeoff performance but can't find any "relative" differences between the two.

M5 vs. M7 wings
I'd rec you talk to Rick at Montanabyair@yahool.com. He put M7 wings on an M5 recently and could give you some feedback on performance differences. I know the longer wings allow a slower approach speed but what other differences I'm not sure.

MX7 is what you'll get with that combo but find a A model wing you get a M6..... At least that is what we got. (placard from Maule)

Re: M5 vs M7 wing performance
If it is pre 93'(could be 94) you will have the same wing overall (30') but have the TT flaps to get the Uni wing it would have to be after that, so again to many vairables.....NZMaule wrote:Just wondering if anyone has worked out relative performance differences (% or TO and landing distances) attributed to the M7 wing compared to the M5 wing i.e. a M5 180c compared with Mx7-180b, same weight, same field, same pilot, same conditions. Haveing had the wing change done here on Bill's M5 I can tell you the slowflight is nice but sometimes he misses the short wing for the ablity to realy get the sink you need sometimes.

The Droop tips were on the early 6's then they changed to the current style with the short aileron and changed again to the 60" aileron. Bill has the square tips and modifided aileron (short)

You can't because that's not IAW the type certificate, I don't think. I don't think it would fit anyway, but there should be a little better lift while in ground effect. In other words you should be able to land a little slower and T/O a little slower. Probably not much real difference in reality. I think there may be a little less drag in cruise also, again not much.mountainflyer wrote:What was the advantage of the drooped tip. Would it be worth changing the square tip to drooped on an 86 MX7.
My theory is the droop tip was abandoned because with the square tip you can fit a longer aileron without increasing the wing length. Increase the wing length and I believe you may have to recertify at least the wings static strength and that at least means time and money.
I think the new tip isn't really a square tip, I think it's actually a hoerner tip.

You can modify an M5 to M6 by changeing wings to 32'11", or 33'8", which also will require the longer chord rudder. There is some airframe welding to do. Flap mechanism is totally different on later planes after M4 and M5. You can also change the M5 to early MX7 with 30'10" wing without rudder change I think.
