Which is the best auto pilot for MX7 180B?

Post by Sam Rutherford »

Whilst I love flying, there are times when it would be nice to press a couple of buttons and 'take a break'.

What are your real-life experiences with the different APs out there?

Thanks for any help/advice...

Sam.

I have a Garmin 430, Stek 55 and GPSS. Took a while for all the kinks to work out: 430 misconfiguration and servo connector vibrated apart. I love
it for instrument flying but for the use I make of it, a single axis wing leveler would have been adequate.

Is your S-tec 55 connected to your rudder or aileron for roll control? Thanks for your comments.

My autopilot uses rudder and elevator and the combo works well.

In retrospect, it was pretty funny the first time I went through my checklist and was befuddled that the ailerons weren't turning.

Maules used to have the old Century IIB system which uses the ailerons for direction. S-tec uses the rudder.
S-tec 20 for direction, 30 for direction and altitude hold, is the lightest.
The 40 and 50 add a bit more sophistication to the above.
The 60 is more than you need in a Maule, i.e. Alt preselect, autotrim, etc.

I have an old Century IIB in my M-4 that still works great as long as the rudder trim is set properly.
