M4/M5 220 Cowl

Post by Mog »

Ok, so it’s come to my attention that there were at least two cowls used on the 220. I’m guessing Duane might have to find this info, but apparently there is a NACA intake version that Maule experimented with on the M5. This intake gets rid of the long tunnel on the cowl. Would also drop some weight because the intake tunnel would be removed. However the oil cooler would need to be changed as well. Seems maybe a NACA on the right side of the cowl achieved that? Anyways, does anyone have info on these NACA cowls. Most importantly why Maule didn’t use this design at the end of the day. Maybe just because the Franklin was discontinued via Maule and this was the newer cowl style?

Ok, additional unconfirmed data.

Maule created a new cowl for the M4 without the big intake tunnel. This was installed on the last two M4 220’s ever made. This also might have been The case with a couple M5’s that were switched later on before leaving Maule.

So theoretically the NACA M4 cowl should be an upgrade in some way or another. Certainly seems it may be easier to install and most definitely will reduce drag a bit. And the setup should be lighter without the aluminum tunnel and brackets etc.

Hopefully someone from Maule can confirm what went on.

Mog, perhaps it was not for the M5 but the experimental red and black MX/M8 which was to use the 205hp diesel, then the 220 Franklin which was toyed with when it seemed Franklin might get back in the game.
That unit now has a 235hp Lyc.

Interesting, yes it is white on top, black on bottom with a thick red strip. Does that sound right?

Are you referring to the airplane or the cowl being for sale?

The airplane. It will have a very different cowl with the O540 Lyc than when it had the O350 Frank.
Suggest you check with Maule, they may have the other cowl laying by in the hanger of interesting stuff.

Seems Maule sold it and a few other items together. The cowl was for sale on barnstormers awhile back and the guy just responded to me.
