Making metal Two

As you have seen from an earlier post my fixed pitch Maule is making some metal so now is decision time...do I spend $$$ to rebuild/OH a C4F or $$$$$ and go C1F constant speed? I cannot say i am thrilled with the fixed pitch performance and was very disappointed that senscnich stopped supporting their prop backing plates.

Does anyone run an Fixed Pitch MT prop on an MXT as I might consider that as a plan B. Would love to hear some comments.

So far the only availability I have found is from the factory for a 0360C1f with a ding $ for sending in a non-like case. Thought I would check if anyone knows of a C!F rebuilt or ready to be rebuilt that was available.

As always appreciate any comments.

couple of points. The constant speed system adds aprox 50 lbs to empty weight, However your gross weight will increase by 100 lbs. You can get 14 lbs back by switching to Odysey battery.
You will gain a little cruise speed and a bit of take off performance.
No more spinner problems.
Both engines can use autogas.
You need more gauges, a governor, a prop (with option of expensive MT), a prop control and brackets.
The plane will be worth more.

If I could I'd go to CS prop at the time of rebuild.

In addition to what Jeremy mentioned I'll add less workload in turbulance (no need to adjust throttle/RPM in response to up and downdrafts), the ability to use full throttle abouve 7,500' and in descent and updrafts (no need to throttle back to keep the RPM out of redline), better 'braking' on descent (high drag of prop at flat pitch), quieter operation at cruise, and more control over power setting in general, and better MPG.

To add further to what Jeremy said, much shorter takeoff, faster climb, and higher useful load.

Downsides: a little net weight gain on the nose, much more $ to buy, and more maintennece and things to break.

IIRC the delta in price when I ordered my Maule was $20,000, and I thought at the time it was not worth it. Indeed, despite everything I just said, I don't think it's worth a $20,000 delta but maybe $5,000.

+1 for the C1F. I Love mine. It does add ~ 50lbs to the nose but most (if not all) of the M(?)-180's are plagued by aft CG anyways so that 50 adds ballast to the good end. Also you do gain 100lbs gross. And the versatility far outweighs the weight. And helps longevity of the engine IMHO due to the fact you can dial in your MP and it remains constant in cruise and the engine is not constantly changing RPM's.
