Worth Converting an "A" to a "B"?

Post by Chris in Milwaukee »

I've got a few hundred hours to go before I hit TBO, but it got me thinking. When it's time for overhaul, is it worth it to upgrade from a 180A to a 180B? The performance number, according to the spec sheet, are admirable. But are they $20,000 more admirable (guessing)?

I know TBO isn't always a determining factor, but it's a good reference point. :)

Sometimes, trading planes may make more sense. Also, the Hartzell on an O-360 will have AD's if it hasn't been condemned or orphaned by Hartzell yet. An MT conversion will eliminate the rpm restriction, AD, and take 15 lbs off the nose, but a pricey option, although there is only about $2K difference between a new Hartzell OE prop and the MT. If you're spending the money for a prop the MT is a better option.

I thought that, too, but failed to say it out loud :)

Restling with the same thing as I am about 1750 hours. I agree from research the mt prop seems to be the way to go. Still trying to balace a known plane upgraded vs another plane already there. Love to hear others thoughts and experiences.
