Bigger tires on an MXT

Post by gregorydshanks »

With acknowledgement of the immutable law of planes and mankind "maximus desirus eternus", that bigger is ALWAYS better, I am considering putting 8.00-6 tires on the mains of my MXT-180 and 7.00-6 on the nose. I am told that you have to turn the bolts around on the nose fork to make the 7.00-6 fit, so I am assuming that as true.

My plane spends 75% of its time on grass, but truthfully, cool-factor is a leading consideration. I understand Air Trac are softer tires.

Comments and advice please.

Merry Christmas

Depending on the 7.00x6 nose tyre used the centrifugal throw is what May contact the four bolts thus the reason to turn them for better clearance.
DO add the 3.75" length of rad hose and three hose clamps (not too tight) to the chrome strut to absorb the compression, that way there will never be metal contact and you will avoid leaky nose seals as you won't ever compress as far as the oil at bottom. This will also give better braking as it prevents the nose from going too low and thus taking weight from the braking mains.

How are you going to get it through the "Feds"? Richmond FSDO told me some years ago "We don't do field approvals any more , you'll need a STC".

I'm hoping Nashville FSDO will be easier to work with. In the past, they have been pretty flexible.

How much will the bigger wheels affect performance?

MXT nose wheel hangs down quite far in flight....

Speed loss at cruise will be no more than 5mph dependent on tyre size, worstbeing 7.00 nose and 8.50 mains.

I've been considering exactly this same modification for mine. I've never done it before. What is involved with getting a field approval? Is that just the sort of thing that you leave to your mechanic?

Would the plane explode in a red puff of slime without the paperwork?

When you guys start changing out the 700/600 tri gear tires, let me know if you need to rid yourself of them!

I've been questioning the need/desire to do this to my new purchase as well.

Look forward to seeing the results.

Should those two words (need/desire) not always be interchangeable when we're talking about our toys?
