Dynon EFIS

Post by crbnunit »

I picked up a Dynon EFIS D10a on the cheap. Really cool unit. Since my DG has been little more than a noisy paperweight for some time and would cost almost as much to overhaul/replace as the Dynon unit, I thought this might be an opportunity to remove it along with the vacuum system to save a little weight and panel space.

It is now STC’d for several for 150’s, 152’s, 172’s, PA-28’s and PA-38’s as primary instrument replacements. Not for the Maule, of course. This one came out of a Supercub. Anyone have any experience getting one of these things field approved? I wouldn’t think it would be all that hard as it is STC’d for other models. Thoughts? Recommendations?

Jeff-
We have been installing these for a couple of years in cubs, etc with logbook entry only required in FAI and ANC, but couldn't break into pitot system legally, so just left unhooked... Talk to Merrill Field Avionics for further info.. Looks like the new STC will allow you to use more systems, and should be very easy to install as per STC on any aircraft with a straightforward field approval process. I should think it would be a no brainer, just need to find an IA to do and submit paperwork for you and buy off on final installation... Neat, there's a lot of info in that little screen and much easier to scan once you get used to layout!!

This is one of the best ideas ever! I will certainly be submitting a 337 on this also. If we all contact dynon and cried would they stc it?
I can't remember if I fired six shots, or only five.....

I asked them today what the likelihood of getting the pitot STC'd so we could use the AOA feature. The reply was "Unlikely". Evidently there is not enough profit in pitot tubes for them to push it through the process...

I would expect that STC developed by EAA does, in fact, hook up pitot system as is advertised on whatever aircraft they approve with STC... So it should be pretty easily done with STC/field approval with model addition, on the Maule! It does make for slick installation, even with just logbook entry and leaving pitot disconnected? Where there's a will, there's a way!! These also have NO MOVING Parts, so attitude indicator MUCH MORE durable, and able to take abuse of tumbling often seen in aerobatic aircraft with out failure!! This is neat pocket FMS that is available to overlay on Dynon as well.

It hooks up to but does not replace the existing, "certified" pitot. It does not replace it. To use the AOA, you have to use Dynon's non-certified unit. Wonder how they would feel about running a second pitot for the AOA only.

I remember several articles in the various publications that mentioned the AOA add on as a minor item as in the second pitot being mounted through an inspection cover at the beginning of the Part 21 &23 rewrite debate.
