Repowering a MX7 160

Post by dickbutz »

This is going to be the dumb question of the day but can a Maule
160 be repowered with a 180 or 235 (presumably by Maule)and be
re-rated as a factory type certificate...I have seen the short
hull powered by a 235 before but I don't know what the model
is...Dick Butz

It's fairly easy to change the 160/180 from 1993 with 32'11' wing but expensive to change to a 235 because of weight and balance, guages, exhaust, controls, cowling, fuel pumps, prop, governor etc etc. Probably not worth it. There were no 160hp before 1993.

My plane is a 1999 160C and I would like to repower as a 180 with a constant speed prop...Do you have any Idea what the conversion costs would be?...at a guess...I would like the extra 100lbs gross and the 100 mph...Dick

You will gain 300lb gross wt. 145mph tas on a 59deg day with standard altitude lapse rate on 7.00x6 tyres and one antenna.
Prop, spinner assy., governor, control, guage, oil line, pump, under 12k plus labour.
Cost of new or used engine ????? less sale of your engine and prop plus setup and labour to r and r.
I don't know if you need a different engine mount, would have to check among some other items.
Relocation kit of battery, solenoid, and wireing and firewall fittings, and labour.
I may have missed a thing or two but thats a 2 min ballpark guess.

Thanks Jeremy...
I guess the answer really is to sell the 160 and buy a 235 in the first place...I learned a long time ago that anything "Aviation" was actually spelled "Money"...Thanks again...Dick Butz

160 to 180

Post by mike davis »

I am in the process of converting my mx7 160 to a mx180b right now you will need the 0360 c1f for and this is the hard part finding one. The mount is the same just need to weld on the pro gov. bracket if not there also remark airspeed, install manifold/ fuel pressure gauge,prop/spinner a husky prop will work if it is the newer B styl hub. Battery can stay on firewall .Maule has a mod kit 30 that covers the conversion.Hope this helps if you want more info.would be glad to help. one other thing you could convert your 0320 the case is the same.

Manifold, pressure gauge

Post by Gary Raser »

My manifold pressure gauge in the 2002 m7 235 is acting sporadic. Should I replace it with something else or get it rebuilt
