Cleveland brake fittings + HD gear

Post by Mog »

So I got my AK bushweels gear installed today!

But I am curious about brake line routing and caliper fittings

My calipers have 90* fittings, not the 45* I have seen on a few maules.

What fitting fits best and how do you prefer to route the brake hose?

I have the double puck brakes with 8.5X6 good years. The calipers are mounted up front at the moment.

This was the best I could come up with.

Not my pic of course

Looks about right from what I can see on the giant picture.

Just removed my fairing from my right leg. Holy cow was it bent! Also had one badly bent nas bolt up top and a badly bent std bolt on the lower oleo mount.

Starting to wonder how much this was effecting my ground handling before I departed the runway aggressively. The right side never touched the ground during my incident so the bent gear was pre.

I always thought she felt squirrelly compared to other tail wheels.

I think the picture you showed is of my airplane. If I remember correctly, we didn't have a lot of choices on routing the ABW flexible stainless steel brake lines due to their length and the location of the cable clamp fittings. The calipers only fit on the front with the Cleveland wheel conversion kit and dual-puck brakes. It's better that way from my point of view since the brake pads aren't as exposed to dirt and water. I didn't know that you could get a 45 degree fitting for the attachment to the caliper. I think the 90 degree fitting is what we received from ABW with the brake lines.

Am installing the flex brake lines on standard gear. Found this old thread and looks like what I may need to do because of their length. I can't see the pic that Mog posted at the start but from Wup's pic it looks like 45 degree fittings taking the hose around the back. Will someone please confirm that and also, are those -4 fittings?

Wup is that the extended heavy duty gear or just the stock length?

Gary and Wup, I noticed that you route the stainless steel brake lines behind the gear legs to protect them from branches and rocks. Mine are routed in front of the gear leg because of the 90 degree fitting that screws into the caliper. When it's fully seated, it points toward the wing tip. How did you arrange the 45 degree fitting to stop at the right orientation pointing backward without fully tightening it in the caliper?

I'm also trying to figure out the best way of jacking up the main gear leg to fit the 31" bushwheel on. Did you use a particular jack pad? My hydraulic floor jack isn't too stable with a piece of wood between it and the axle hub. I don't like pushing the wood up against the oleo strut nut either. I think a scissors jack like most cars use would be the best way to go but I still need a decent jack pad.
