Seeking Maule CFI in CO or CA

Post by ChulitnaLodgeAK »

Hi Maulepilots.org!
First time posting.

I am a fairly new pilot, just under 200hrs, with most my hours in a c-172.
The specs of a Maule truly fit my flight needs and based on what I've read, it seems an MX7-180 is the right plane for my main uses at my lodge in Alaska, where a combination of high useable load from airport to gravel runway and ability to take lighter loads for landings in the bush is ideal.
I also have been a professional in the ski industry for many years, so am eager to (eventually) get on the ski-plane kick!

I am not working currently, and am in the lower 48, so would love to find a CFI in either Colorado or Southern California with a Maule who can spend 4-5 hours with me a day for a week or so (I am a highly motivated, but also very patient, USMC veteran who is humbly open to taking instruction and not trying to push beyond my limits).

Any thoughts/contacts appreciated.

Sounds like you plan to put plenty of time in before flying alone. Are you tail wheel rated already? If not I personally suggest 10hrs minimum with instructor and 20-40hrs before you fly with other people. Maules are not hard to handle at the end of the day but they can bite you if you get to cocky. Again, just my 2¢

I think I remember hearing about a guy in Chico, Ca that has a lot of Maule experience. I do not know if he owns a Maule and will do instruction in it. I will try to find out.
No great story started with a good idea...

Have you looked in the CFI section of our forum? It might be worth while to scroll through there as well.

I wish I could help you but my insurance coverage, as well as many on this forum, won't cover instruction in my aircraft.
You might someone that can do it so don't give up the search.
Good luck,
