Post by John Ashcroft »

I am interested to see whet speed other peoples Maules stall at, we have an M5235C which indicates around 45kts at the stall, full flaps with VG's and gap seals

Is this power off stall? Do you have 15-35 degree flaps or the later 20-40 flaps? My M5 180C stalls at 49-50 mph power off indicated with 35 degrees flaps. The M4 has 70" flaps, M5 has 90" flaps; M6 has 120" flaps, and the M7 ranges from 114" to 126" depending on model. The 20-40 degree flap ratchet upgrade is on my wishlist. We'll see how that changes once installed.

Right under 50 mph with a little power and full flaps. Mine is a heavy M5 235 at close to 1600 lbs. I have VG's, gap seals, and 40 deg flaps. It'll drop like the proverbial brick with no power so catching it with a shot of power is the best way I've found to stave off the stall.

I will be carrying out this very check at the weekend weather permitting; Got someone looking at my brake lines first; left brake seems a bit intermittent!
I Maule over it

I did a few stalls this morning under various configurations. I have a M6-235C, just over 1500lbs empty weight. Onboard was just myself, Mrs, and nearly full main tanks. Nothing loaded in the baggage. No VG's and No gap seals.

0 Flap power off - 60MPH
24 Flap power off - 50MPH
40 Flap power off - 40MPH
48 Flap power off - 40MPH
48 Flap Full power - 40MPH (very nose high)

What I did notice is that the stall warning light is not coming consistently. Had to stop after the last one since the Mrs wasn't liking the idea of stalls anymore.

Please feel free to comment, as I still have a lot to learn.

Yes, you do have a lot to learn - mainly quit doing stalls with your wife in the plane!!!!

Well, maybe yours is ok with it, but mine would jump out.
I can't remember if I fired six shots, or only five.....

Hahahah,

She actually did well, but then she did have 2 travel sickness tablets in her. She only didn't like the last stall, full flap and full power. Maule started to drop a wing and she got a little fright. All ok though.

When we got on the ground after a few touch and goes and 2balked landings she even said she enjoyed it. Go figure.

76 M-5 235C - Stall

Post by joebelson »

Short Wings; Droop Tips; VGs; gap Seal; 50% fuel (31 gal); 400lb up front (pilot & Co Pilot)

Power @ idle - 40 flap - stalls at 61 MPH every time.

Exactly where the factory put the start of the white arc with 34 degree flaps!
Red Stall Warn light comes on at 64MPH.

Very stable and manageable on touchdown, albeit fast for STOL - imho.
I approach at 72MPH and slow to 68 over the fence (15-20ft agl), "cessna flare" at 2-3ft agl; on good days red light comes on 1 second before a gentle ker-plop! Note: it just stops flying , no float; no bounce, heavy on the wheels.

I had been coming in at 65 (still very stable; nose pretty high) but sink was too much for me and I had a tendency to consistently flare into a stall at 10-12ft requiring power burst finesse. I never got any good at managing o235 power bursts - which would put me way down the 1,800 ft runway before able to hit the brakes. With 72MPH approach it is typically stopped well under 1,000 ft.

Get a digital inclinometer:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01H1 ... UTF8&psc=1

Check the washout on both sides and compare to the maintenance manual specs...

Check it at the root and compare to the outer most rib near the wingtip.

Re: 76 M-5 235C - Stall

Are you sure your AS Indicator is correct? Also, are you positive you are stalling, not just setting into the maule sink rate? I feel two very distinct sensations in my plane. The first is the transition from normal flight to the maule sink rate. This is a pretty noticeable feeling. Then comes the actual stall which is just increased sink rate with a few tell tale stall indications. Even in a stall I have quite a bit of control.

Anyways, sorry if I’m being captain obvious, but 61mph is really high.
