best books?

Post by Sam Rutherford »

Whilst I'm at home of an evening, any recommends on good books for both general flying, but particularly off-tarmac ops?

I've FE Potts' book, which is great - particularly the photos of the various wives :o , and was wondering if there are other good ones for the library.

Safe flights, Sam.

Sam,
A great book is called "Wager with the Wind" by Don Sheldon. It's about the advent of the Alaskan Bush pilot back in the late 40's and early 50's.
Good arm chair reading..........it'll get your flying juices flowing.

Best Book for Winter Reading

Post by Bob Leve »

I agree with Jeremy. Wind, Sand, and Stars is one of the most philosophical, yet interesting books I have ever read. It is a masterpiece that captures the emotion of the early days of flying. You will feel as if you had crashed in the remote Sahara and were struggling against 100K Patagonian winds that blow you out to sea.

I just finished a book by Mort Mason "Flying the Alaska Wild" and enjoyed it thoroughly. I just ordered his second book "The Alaska Bush Pilot Chronicles" as well as your suggestions mentioned above.

I found excellent prices on Half.com and Amazon.com

My Heart is Africa is a fantastic account by Scott Griffin about a 180 pilot who flys from Toronto to Africa for a few months to help out the Flying Doctors.

Hi, I know Scott - and it's a great book.

Also hoping to get a copy of CC Pocock's book in Cape Town next week.

Safe flights, Sam.

"The Spirit of St. Louis" by Charles A. Lindbergh. I haven't read it for years and am currently reading it to my son as his bedtime book. One of the best ever by one of the best ever, especially when he is remembering past adventures while trying to stay awake.
