I have an 85' MX7-235 with a Lycoming IO-540 I use only at start up especially cold. Full rich and full throttle setting turn on pump for a few seconds until flow is indicated then off. As I understand, it primes for cold start , clears lines if vapor locked , and will back up mechanical pump if fails. Just had my Dukes boost pump overhauled 600.00 at Oklahoma Air.
Best Regards

Carburetted Maules use the Dukes fuel boost pump to retrieve fuel pressure if lost for any reason, it is a backup, check Lyc manual for minimum acceptable fuel pressure.
Injected Maules use the Dukes for the above plus priming and/or flushing a hot vaporized fuel line.
