Alaska Flyins - Valdez

Post by YELLOWMAULE »

Hey Alaska Pilots, who and how many are planning on going to Valdez this year?
I'm sitting here planning out what events are coming up and got to thinking about things. There are four or five of us that will probably be going over together. Chet Harris says he'll have his new engine in by then and the Peril is running strong. It would be fun to fly over enmasse.
Any of you Fairbanks guys planning on going?
Later in the summer there will also be the Palmer event the first weekend of August.
Live it like its your last day.

I have been thinking of making the trip down from Coldfoot. I haven't been before but would like to take the boys. How kid friendly are the events and is camping available or is everyone in hotels? The boys are 4 and 5. Regardless it will hinge on finishing my annual. I have been busy at work and haven't been able to finish everything up yet. I should be done shortly with the annual and then hopefully be out and about again.

Are there dates for it yet? I suppose it's possible to go down and get stuck there because of weather. Hows their airport for winds? Not to many landing options if the weather is bad.

Depends on the date. If I am off shift I would like to go down. Maybe take some people out fishing!

Easy to get stuck down there in the WX, I think it's the weekend after the show in ANC which is on the weekend of 5/2-5/3....

I was in valdez year before last and it seemed kid friendly. There were tents in the tiedown area beneath wings. Wind down the runway. It is the weekend after the Ak Trade show in Anchorage.

I'll know that on the last day of April. Don't want to make any snap decisions.

I am going to try and make it down there. All depending on the weather, annual, moon position and all that. Hope to make it down and see some Maule support. Anyone going to enter the competitions?

Just curious, when flying from Fairbanks to Valdez, what's your best course to follow? Do you fly over those big mountains or follow the valley and pipeline up through Thompsons Pass?

Given nice wx you can go direct, but for max optional landing strip, follow the Rich'. You can cut across the flats to bypass the Big D corner.

The Annual's done :D and the skis are off :( Breakup is upon us in a pretty big way. Two things left to complete a successful Beakup and the arrival of Spring; Bears and Valdez.
Just giving this thread a BUMP! Three weeks to go...............!
