That's OK Mau Mau....the most important event at Llano this year will be the 2nd Annual Lone Star Maule Roundup, May 2-4, 2014. Hope to see you there.

THE RESULTS ARE IN !!!

Post by Russell461 »

Texas Maules were well represented at the Texas STOL Roundup in Llano this past weekend....12 to be exact. 6 Maules entered the Light Touring Class and took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place. Congratulations to Ross McCrea 1st Place with a combined take-off roll and landing distance of 345' (142' t/o, 203' landing), David Isham took 2nd Place, and Kyle Hopf 3rd Place.

This was just good practice for the 2nd Annual Lone Star Maule Roundup competition May 3rd at Llano, TX. You don't want to miss it !!!

I would like to let everyone in the Maule group know how much fun I had this weekend.
I showed up like the Clampetts with wife, 2 sons and a daughter-in-law in tow. I had also talked 10 or 15 more plane addicts into driving halfway across Texas to attend. We were all treated as you would expect from a bunch of Good 'old Boys. We had a blast. The Maule guys treated us as family and the folks at the Llano airport went out of their way to make everyone happy.

If any of you are around Llano, the facility is great. Biggest patch of grass to play on as you would ever hope to find, cheap fuel, and clunkers all over to get to town.

The most fun I've had with my clothes on in a long time.

Thanks to all.

Russell and the gang,
I too, like Mau Mau, tried to make the excursion. Our intention was to drive up Sat. morn. Needless to say the weekend gremlins got us. Sorry we missed it. But it's II Annual Roundup come he-- or high water.
Thanks to all of you, who do all this prep.

This was lots of fun! If you missed it, I would encourage you to make it next time, and for sure don't miss the Maule Roundup in May.

There were somewhere upwards of 100 planes on the field Saturday. Everything from all the Cessnas, to Carbon Cubs, Huskies, and Super Cubs, to a Stearman and a Turbine Bird Dog, and all kinds of light sport and experimentals.

The Maules were out in force, and they didn't go unnoticed. They did draw some attention and positive comments. They were well represented and well piloted, too. Not only did they sweep the light touring STOL class, but Maules were 1st and 2nd in the flour bombing, too.

One guy said to me "I've never even seen a Maule in person before, much less this many in one spot. I didn't know there were that many around here....Cool!" There was a pretty hefty crowd of spectators that showed up to just look at planes and watch the competition.

Good job and thanks to everybody that made the trip. As always, the more...the merrier! So I hope everyone that can will make the trip to Llano first of May.

Thanks to all of you that were there for the good camaraderie and friendly competition. Looking forward to the next one.

VIDEO from the STOL Roundup

Post by Russell461 »

My apologies for not getting more photo's and/or video of other Maule contestants. A couple of friends grabbed my 35 MM and used their iPhone to video my heat so we didn't get Ross McCrea (1st place in Light Touring Class) or some others in the video. Hopefully, everyone will bring their GoPro to the Maule Roundup and shoot some great video so we can get it added to the Roundup Video.

One thing I DID notice about almost EVERY contestant in the STOL Competition (except the Maules)...... Everyone was dragging their plane in on the prop trying to land short. Even the Bushplanes / Experimentals did this. Shocking !!! The Maule Pilots used the proper STOL technique (thanks Patrick Romano for your training video) to drop in on the landing target. Some did a better job than others but WOW.....it was fun to watch. No doubt, the Maules wowed the crowd at this event !!!

Enjoy......

My wife got a little video of the first group, iPhone quality.
The second plane to land was Ross McCrea's scratch. The second was shorter, but not on her phone. There is also a clip of Leleand Foster and Sean dropping a flour bomb.

It looks like you guys had an absolutely awesome time!

Great video Russell! Were you running out of aileron authority on approach?

It also looks like David Isham was flying the pants off of his beautiful M6!

Congratulations David!

My son wrote a little poem after our trip to llano.
He showed it to a friend and he said to call it "The Solo"

The Solo

Looking down the runway the prop begins to turn
I try to remember all that I've learned
I add some throttle and grab the yoke
I hope this all isn't one big joke
I release the brakes and begin to roll
All that stress was taking its toll
Speeding up now and the tail picks up
It's now or never wish me good luck
My speed is right and I draw the yoke back
The stress begins to fade and that's right on track
I'm airborne now and begin to climb
No more stress and it's about time
Looking down at the earth
I can't help but wonder Why it all just seems like one big blunder
The freedom i feel while I'm in the air
Can only be measured if you're willing to dare
I enter the pattern and I turn downwind
I feel like I'm leaving my one true friend
I bank for base and my heart starts to pound
Be with me lord all the way to the ground
I turn on final and she starts to sink
I need more time is all I think
As I pull the power and start my flare
All my worries I just don't care
My wheels touch the pad and I slow her down
I need more fuel for one more round.
