Beluga fly-in

Post by akloon »

It so happens that the night of the 24th is the bachelor celebration of some other aviation minded friends and their plan is Saturday night at the Beluga strip, to allow float and wheel capable attendance. I plan on being there. The more the merrier!
I'll be up near Delta starting tonight until Friday or early Saturday chasing moose.

Olson Creek is located at 61 14' 15"N 151 04' 10"W
When landing, it's best to use the upstream half of the strip. The most upstream 200' is sandy gravel and then turns to 4" to 10" rock that is fairly flat. stay to the river side for smoother ground. after about 600' of upstream rwy it gets rougher with some blown sand humps and dips. all in all about 1000+ ft but rough on downstream end. Also, there is a small turnaround/park area near the downstream end. Upstream is a little tight to turn around with power. I wimped out, shut down and manhandled around at that end. I hate willow in my prop. There might be more space now water levels are dropping.

Here are some pics from yesterday.
The strip is the straight line in the center that diagonals toward the strut. It looks narrow and short but in reality you could land 50' on either side and run about 400' off the end and be just fine. pretty flat and smooth out there and I have never used more than half.

I spent a full day chasing one of those bears around there weekend before last. :x
In addition to the strip, there are numerous gravel bars that are more than adequate. Some are sand, some have rocks.
Live it like its your last day.

Forecast seems promising for the weekend. Anyone still planning to drop in?

I have some things I need to do Saturday morning but was planning on heading out about 1300 or so. Either not much wood or a long walk to get it. If people want a fire, better plan on bringing some out or collecting it from nearby strips.

We have had lots of years with no snow before Halloween. 10/11 sounds good! Where?

Some pics from yesterday. 4 Mauls made it out. One on floats so it is not included in the group. I had planned on staying the night but it never stopped raining and we all bugged out.

OK, we have to share some with the Cubs. It was a little busy out there!

Flew a different route on the flight out.

The Rain is another reason to repeat this in 2 1/2 weeks wx permitting and hope a campout is still possible. I would along with one of the maulepilots.org member who keeps his Maule at lake hood since I would need more time to fly mine up from Washington (next yr maybe?). Not sure yet whether it would work out, but if so, then the Maule may be either on floats or wheels, so best if it would be a place to accommodate both...

I'm sorry I missed you guys. I couldn't get out until about 6pm. The cubs were part of the group I was supposed to overnight with. They stayed out, the rain stopped at about 7, finally. I had to go back, but I'll be on wheels this week and ready to go back out in Oct.

So, October. Same plan or a different location?
