Thanks for the tip, I may be able to make it.

Looking at the AOPA airport directory I can't quite figure out the grass runway. Is there a parallel 25 that's not really charted?

Yes, there is ordinarily room to take off or land in the grass, parallel to the paved runway.

However, this weekend, I think that space will be filled with parked aircraft.

Grass

Post by TomD »

From the pictures on the website it looks as if the grass runway will be parking.

If not, I flew in there a few weeks ago and the trees at the end of the grass are getting a bit high which makes "stepping" from the hard surface approach to the grass after the trees a pretty good option.

Concete and Tieton

Post by TomD »

Went to Concrete Fly-In on Saturday. Great little fly in, with some aircraft I have never seen before. Saw both the Boeing B-40 and Laird fly early in the day.

Then on Sunday flew over to Tieton State Airport via Ranger Creek. Absolutely beautiful two days. Only issue was there had been cows on the runway at Tieton and cow manure is really hard to get off the plane after it has baked on.

I had to work on Saturday and Sunday went to Lake Wallowa/Joseph....

Sorry I missed the Fly-In.

I've been meaning to go to Tieton State. That's the Forest Service strip with the approach over the lake, right?

Anything I need to know?

Thanks.

Bill

Pretty wide open approach to the East. Uphill over a arm of the lake. You really need to do a fly over to make sure cows or elk are not on the runway.

It is a bit rough on the upper end, but you will find that out when you taxi to take off.

If you are so inclined, landing to the West normally requires a low level turn. Add to that if you are landing that way due to winds the turbulence off the trees and hills could get squirrely. Set up you approach over the trees aiming at the upper windsock and when you break into the clear at the top of the runway turn left to line up. Plenty of runway if you need/or want to go in that way.

I understand from folks that stayed the drive in campers around the lake get pretty loud at night.

BTW, no drinking water near the strip.

Good to know.

Too bad about the loud campers. Some people have no respect for quit beauty.

I may head up there for a day trip and maybe a swim in 2 weeks.
