Forum readable for everyone or only registered, logged in members?

Post by Christine »

What do you guys think? I would love to get your feedback.
(same post as in public section -....my other post didn't unlock for you to give me your input)

I have restricted guests from being able to read everything in our forum as they could before.
Previously you had to be logged in only if you wanted to post or contact a member. Now you have to be registered, activated and logged in in order to read most of the posts (other than registration related and trouble shooting posts)
A lot of members have never logged in or forgot their login information. I imagine that we will now get a lot of requests for lost passwords but also lost username information and we will see whether we should keep this forum locked to our group or whether we should open it up for guests (read only)
This OUR forum, pertaining to all of us - Please log in and post your opinion/preference if you have one
Thank you

My opinion is readable for all registered, guests & lurkers alike . For posting to and PMs and looking at members profiles should be logged in as a member.

I like the idea of restricting what guests and inactive registered users can see on the forum. We can use the forum's voting feature to decide what topics to put in the publicly visible forums. I think the forum is most valuable for sharing information about Maules between active registered users. Right now a user is set to active or inactive by the admins. If a user registers but never posts, then they aren't contributing and should be marked inactive. Registered users who have not contacted the admins to become active should be purged after a year.

This forum encapsulates all that is best about Maules and people who own, fly and maintain them - people freely sharing knowledge, opinions and experience.

I like the idea of folk being able to read this resource without registering or logging in.

I agree with V A Maule & Njacko re: freely sharing knowledge, but for posting, PMs and looking at members profiles logging in required.

How do we vote; by posting here? I’m for it being open for anyone to read, but login required to post, send PMs or look at member profiles.

I agree with Andy. Being able to browse here before buying my Maule helped me in my search/purchase process, and encouraged me to become a member.

Can you tell us what you mean by "old format" Mr. Z? There are many things that we can do with a customized style to make the new forum look more like the old one. However, we can't change the basic layouts in phpBB 3, which is open source software outside our control. We need more information about the desired changes in order to do anything. We only want to make changes that are requested by the majority of the forum members since everyone has their own opinion of what looks best.
