IO 360 Running Hot

Post by belandd »

The standard cyl head temp gage on my M5-210 shows me running pretty hot during climb. It pulls back some in level flight but still stays most of the way over.
My engine oil temp stays in the middle.

Is it normal for these engines to run this hot?

How old is your baffling?
These engines are very intolerant of poor cooling.

Running Hot

That was the first thing that came to my mind.

I will check out the baffeling next time I am out at the airplane.

My factory gauge reads about 60 degrees hotter than my EI UGB16. I tested the factory probe/gauge and found it to be way off. Mine shows red line in climb all the time but the EEI never shows on that same cylinder more than 380 degrees with a red line of 440.

All my baffles seals were replaced about 4 years ago.

Call me if you have any questions. My number is in the prop PM

This is a new engine right? New ones will run a little hot until broken in, plus the stock gauges are pretty much worthless, I mean don't keep flying until you verify you actual cyl head temp, and that can be done with a point and shoot IR thermometer like the one Sears sells.
My factory gauge is way up around 400 or so, but my analyzer has me in the mid 350's in cruise.
Plus if you have a vacuum leak, it will run hot.

Overheating

Had a few problems in this regard and rebuilt all the baffles more in line with the IO 360E. Quite frankly the original Maule ones left a lot of room for improvement. Difficult to see how any airflow could cool the underside of the cylinders.
Then had to put a better catch on the oil filler cap door! It flew open with pressure.
Temps came down quite a bit though!

G-MAWL,

Do you have any pictures of your baffling. I am curious about the changes you made.

I'll take some. Essentially I copied the stuff Continental fit to the E series IO360. (new,$1500! Couldn't find used) It directs the air to the underside of the cylinder before exiting between the push rod tubes. I take the view that the cut ali plate originally fitted didn't do that too well. I also spent some time making sure all gaps allowing air to leak from the high pressure side above were sealed up forcing as much as possible through the cylinders and heads.

G-Mawl,
Next time you have your cowling off could you take some photos and post them?
