Abw extended gear install question

The abw gear mounting points are .060 over the gear attach points on the fuselage... I am assuming that a portion of that interference is the powder coat... I am guessing that most are hitting with a die grinder... Just thought i would ask before I do...
And yes both upper and lower oleo bolts are bent and they were NAS(?).. pics to follow once the gear is on.....
Thx
Ap

Yes. Grind to fit.
I have been told they are not all exactly the same. Minor differences during construction especially on the older ones.

You may also find that with one of the gear pivot bolts in place, the holes for the other don’t line up. Airframes Alaska considers it a “good fit” en it comes within half a hole of lining up.

My technique is:

1. Install the gear leg using the rear bolt.
2. Hook one end of a ratchet strap to the bottom of the gear leg, and the other end of the strap to the bottom of the engine mount (right at the bottom engine mount attach bolt, so you don’t risk damaging the mount). Cowl must be off for this.
3. Use the ratchet strap to draw the front gear leg hole into alignment.
4. Install front bolt.

I’ve done several of them this way, with great success.

Lots of grease on the bare metal i am guessing? Anyone ever drilled for zirks?

I just use a bit of motor oil on the bolts themselves. No need for lube elsewhere, assuming legs are ground down so as not to bind against the ears on the airframe. Excess lube there will only attract dirt, sand, etc. when operating off-airport.

I had the same issues with installing the extended gear. I was told by one person that, it is on maule's manufacturing end. There is a lot of variance in the planes themselves and even between the factory gear legs themselves. Once you get past the install troubles seem to work fine. I check the NAS bolts on the oleo's every annual personally myself and replace every 2 years. Cheap insurance to not bend really expensive parts.

Ok , another question? Long gear installed... Oleo boots were shot so i elected to replace them... problem is with the new gear they really don’t fit as previously installed... On that note, were they secured above or below the filler port? I am thinking of installing them cub style?
Thx

They cover the filler port. You have to untie them to service the oleos.

I’ve seen a Bearhawk that had them installed upside down. Seemed to work fine, but more drag, I suppose. Easier to change in the future though...

I sometimes have to trim the flat part (the part that rivets to the belly) in the area between the oleo strut and the gingerbread to make them fit. The aft side.

Yep thats the plan...three of the four gear bolts went ok.... aft rh gave a bit of trouble. May take it back apart and grind more clearance... found the torque plate spacers missing also...My real job is finally catching up to me so i won’ get to finish it up for a while...
