Tire price mystery

Post by Hale-Yes »

I could use some help from this knowledgeable forum with a mystery. What is the reason that the Goodyear 8.00 X 6.00 4 ply tire and tube is so damn much more expensive than the 6 Ply? It seems bas-ackwords. Tire 8.00 X 6.00 4 ply PN. 804C41-1 Price $338.00. Recommended tube PN.06-00821 Price $206.00 Total $544.00. Compared to Tire 8.00 X 6.00 6 ply PN.806C61-5 Price $219.00. Recommended tube PN.06-06300 price $83.00 Total $302.00. I think I would rather have a 4 ply tire. It should offer better flotation and it’s a few lbs. lighter. but I don’t understand why it costs $484.00 more for a set than the 6 ply? What am I missing? Is there something special about the 4 ply? Is it made from unatanimun and unicorn feathers? I was thinking that perhaps Goodyear sells very few 4 ply tires, so a higher price would be in order, but that does not explain why Aircraft Spruce and others recommend a different (and much more expensive) tube for the 4 ply. I checked several other sellers on the price, but there is not much difference. Any ideas on why the big price difference? Regards, Ed

Disregard all that 8.00 stuff and buy a couple 8.50s. You'll be happy.

I had a set of Goodyear 8.50x6.00 tires for 8 years and loved them. Jeremy recommended the Goodyear since they wear better than other brands and I'm glad that I went with them. They're heavier and larger (21") than other brands. The rubber is very thick and tough. I bought Goodyear tubes for them as well and found them to be thick and tough as well. It was a bit of a challenge to get the tubes on the rims because of that but not a show stopper. There was still tread and no signs of wear through to the plies when I replaced them in 2016 with 31" ABI tundra tires.
