Hi,
we tried today to remove an old Presto starter from the engine inside the engine compartment. The long shaft coming out of the starter going into the engine however seems to reqire to remove the magnetos to be able to get the starter out between engine and firewall. Anyone here familiar with this situation who can confirm that this is necessary or have a better idea?

Hi David,W.A.T. wrote:Compress the starter bendix. Drive out the retaining pin. Remove starter.
we got it out and the new one in, and it starts immediately again with the new starter.
How to compress the starter bendix was the difficult issue here. It compressed by hand to some extent but released the retaining pin only half. It needed to be compressed with a screw clamp using two distance elements to push back evenly on both sides of the bendix. Then it was easy. It was good to know that this was the way to do it, because otherwise we had thought you couldn't compress it enough.
Thanks.
