tire pressure

Post by iceman »

Anyone with a M4 and 7.00x6 mains know what the best air pressure would be on pavement and on dirt or grass? I've been guessing about 30 on pavement but I think that might be a little high. When these wear out I'm probably gonna go to 800 or 8.50's Thanks.

I heard it said that the right tire pressure is the pressure required to just lift the outermost groove off of the pavement. Seemed to make sense to me. With my 8.50's that's about 20. Have you priced a set of 8.50 tires and tubes?

I just removed my 8.5 tires and now have 6.0 with spats. I used 25 psi in the 8.5 tires and all opperations were on pavement. I made more than 800 landings on that set of tires. I am going to try keeping the 6.0 tires at 30 psi. The tail wheel is at 50 psi.

As above, the outer groove off the pavement. 8.00 are not much different diameter than 7.00 but are wider, the pressure very similar. The 8.50 is larger diameter and lower pressure 22lbs on average though if operating on rocks as low as 18. Beware of tyre slipping on wheel with hard braking. Always make a paintmark register, as a torn out valve can get expensive.

I forgot something, if or when you go to bigger tires, be sure to check for clearance between the tire and the calipers. I believe it's possible to shim out the calipers to maintain the clearance for the wider tire. You need the clearance in case you get a side load on the bigger, softer tire causing it to deflect into the caliper which will of course act like a brake that you didn't ask for.
I'm not positive about the shims, mine came with 8.50's. It's one of those things I've heard about and it seemed logical.

The shims of 1/8th inch three/wheel are Cleveland parts and can be got from Maule or a Cleveland supplier. They are used with the 8.50 tyre.
