MX7 pre-purchase inspection

Post by MX7fun »

I am looking for a mechanic who is based in North-West Oregon, has lots of experience with Maule MX7 airplanes and who could do a pre-purchase inspection.

I do not have a name for you, but I would highly recommend you personnally take a day or so with the mechanic and get familiar with the plane rudder to spinner. Understand how the seats and floor boards come out, how the cowling comes off, etc. If there is damage history, look at the repairs and make sure the 337 forms clearly describe the work done, and are complete. Carefully inspect the exhaust for leaks and cracks (I just had mine rebuilt after only 450 hrs TT on my MX7-180). Check the weight and balance sheet, it should be up to date with any equipment additions or repairs, painting, etc. You can get a list of all the AD's (Service letters and Service bulletins) that apply to the aircraft on the mauleairinc.com website. Maule keeps records on compliance with the AD's if the owner faxes in the documents. This is a great service, and I would verify that this is current.
In my opinion, the MX7 is an uncomplicated aircraft that you can get up to speed with quickly with the assistance of a knowlegable mechanic. Go through the log books yourself and ask lots of questions. You only get one chance to get things resolved before you decide to buy. Otherwise it will be at your expense at your next annual.
My friend just bought a PA12 with a 160HP engine without the STC paperwork for the engine upgrade. He paid a mechanic (Cub specialist) to do a pre-buy inspection and this was not flagged! Now he has to somehow get his engine FAA legal on his nickel.

Good luck and I hope it works out.
