In spite of not being specified by the FAR's, you would not be able to fly an approach plate, SID, STARS, etc without radio nav aids installed in your aircraft and is most likely the logic an avionics shop will use to determine your aircraft's worthiness for IFR certification. The FAR's do specify that your VOR needs to be tested by you in the last 30 days prior to an IFR flight plan (14 CFR 91.171) even though 91.205 omits this equipment below FL 240.

Yeah, I know, thread drift...

It's all good. It's a function of talking the avionics shop into doing the work according to *your* interpretation of the FARs :)

I have a dream of what I *think* I can get away with when comparing to the REL. Once I get my Photoshop on, I'll post what I'm dreaming about.

This would be the perfect uncluttered affordable modern panel for me (with the tech available at the time of this writing):

Image[

A couple of G5s and a flush-mounted iPad Mini in a new smartPanel from Guardian:

https://www.guardianavionics.com/ifdr-a ... -ipad-mini

Airspeed and Altimeter could be moved to the other side if consolidating to an EIS like an EDM-900. There's plenty of room over there.

As long as we're dreaming, right? :)

Forgive the FlightSim panel. It's the most predictable 2D image of the panel I could find.

Does anyone make a flush-mount for the G5?

Garmin released a flush-mount kit for the G5 recently. I don't see it on the accessories page for the G5 on their site, though. I'll see if I can remember where I saw the part number. BCP perhaps?

There's also a double-decker version, too.

Garmin markets a recessed mount which is a double and you cut it apart for a single. The one Spruce sells looks a lot like the Steinair one. Here is their double:

They are not a full recess but you could space it back since you rivet or screw it to the back of panel anyway.

Chris your photoshop panel looks clean & simple as it should be for Maules ,but what about the ADSB mandated equipment? Can you avoid the airspace or just haven't gotten to that yet?

I haven’t gotten to that yet. My plan for now is Stratus ESGi feeding ForeFlight, though. That Flight Sim panel full of King gear in the photo is pretty close to what I currently have in there, though. I’d love to replace all that stuff with a new Avidyne GPS/Nav/Comm.

The dynon skyview is another option now. At this time the STC only is for the 172 but it won't take to long before the maule is included.

It is! I contacted Dynon and made sure they knew of my interest.

What are you wanting from Dynon, looks like Maules are on the STC now for the D10 and D100. But not for the SkyView yet.

Looks like the G5 is a shade cheaper than the Dynon D10, add the EAA STC and it’s a decent difference. I personally think the G5 is a better looking unit. Plus it appears it’s a fraction of the size on the backside of the panel.
