MX7-180B

Post by montana maule »

I'm considering changing my MX7-160 to a MX7-180B. Would anyone like to share the empty weight and empty weight CG of their 180B? Has anyone done this? What are the pitfalls?

Chris, Rick already has a 235 - he has two Maules.
I can't remember if I fired six shots, or only five.....

I like the more responsive and light feel to the control inputs of the MX7-160 and the lower operating costs compared to my modified M6 with the long M7A wings. The lighter empty weight (250 lbs.) allows for slower stall speed and shorter landing distance. It does require a longer take off run (+50%). So I am looking for more horse power with minimum weight gain.

When loading the MX7-160 I can stay under the gross weight limit but it will exceed the rear of the CG limit. I am wondering it the same holds true of the MX7-180B.

Mine is a 1986 MX7-180 not a MX7-180B but it's similar. No question that the controls are light, especially compared to the Cessna 185 that I fly at work. My empty weight is 1,409 and useful load is 1091. With just me, 40 gallons of fuel in the mains and 30 lbs of survival gear, parts and tools in the rear compartment the CG is 14.6, which is still within the limits. Less fuel puts me close to the forward CG limit so if I'm going any distance, I put some fuel in the aux tanks as well. Although it's a 4-seater, I usually limit the rear seat to one passenger to make sure I don't exceed the aft CG limit. Two 180 lb rear seat passengers means I can't have more than 20 lbs in the baggage area. It's also more comfortable to have one back seat passenger since the cabin is a little narrower back there.

I'm just finishing a 160 to 180B conversion. I don't have WB papers in hand, I just talked about it over the phone with my shop yesterday.
From memory, i'll have 1089 useful load, with single tanks and Garmin 430 in the dash. Went from 2200 to 2500 gwr.
I'll have better details in a few days, will PM my contact info
