Garmin 430/530

Post by Pbfl510 »

All,

Can a Garmin 430/530 fit in the dash of the M-7-235C?

I was told they are very long and could be a problem.

thank you,

The only long problem you run into is trying to put the indicator in the lower hole. It runs into a tube behind the panel. A fix is to reposition that hole a little higher and closer to the upper hole.

Of coarse if I can ever come off the hip enough to buy an HSI that won't be a problem. Or I could get rid of the King and replace it with a small Garmin GPS and forget the second nav head.

Got a 430 and a 250 xl in my panel, no problem except I don't know how to operate them, still navigate with a map and a compass lol

That is my plan. Remove the original DG and replace it with an HSI. Remove the old Kind Radio/Nav and replace with Garmin 430W.

Question for the people who already have HSIs: Are they slaved or not?
Seemed like a lot of extra weight for slaved.

Thank you,

PB

A non slaved HSI is like a DG in that you have to keep resetting it though some DGs go a long time with no precession.
I am selling a Maule at present which has the slaved compass which as you see adds lots of weight.
It is one of those 'it depends' answers.
Will you fly lots of hard IFR or once a year.
Are you good about keeping up with your present DG precession.

Which HSI do you have in mind? That hole while deeper than the stuff on it's right is only so deep. I've seen Maules with what looks like the NSD 360A.

When I first got my M5 about 10 years ago, I was hot to add an HSI during the GPS install. Then my avionics tech explained the weight, complexity and cost of install for a slaved system. I stuck with the DG and separate CDIs.

I am sure glad I did. Now you can install an Aspen Avionics display brand new for less than a used slaved HSI install would run. The Aspen system is competitive even with just the overhaul cost of an HSI.

Weighs less, more display and less cost than an HSI. What's not to like? That being said, I still haven't pitched for the cost for either....
