Think I read somewhere that TCDS had been pulled and inactive? One of the Maule Factory folks ought to be able to clarify if true or not?

This was a 2007 article: What ever happened to this particular aircraft? Is it still operational?

Still registered to Maule Air with that same diesel engine.DeltaRomeo wrote:This was a 2007 article: What ever happened to this particular aircraft? Is it still operational?

Looking on flight aware, it's got a flight track from 2014, but it says the type aircraft is a Baron and it was cruising at 165kts. Makes me think ATC/pilot used the wrong registration.

Think the SMA engine became a Continental engine. Fadec was handled differently by the two manufacturers. Think there was some waiting to see how things shook out. Also remember something about the feds wanting a god awful amount of testing for the diesel cowl. Don't know how far that got.
With that said it's interesting that Cessna has removed the diesel from their single engine line up. So what's that about.
Delivered a 182 with a SMA diesel halfway across the country last year. Worked great but hated the smell of kerosene and above about 8K thought the climb was lazy.

The article write up was rather positive on it's performance; What happened as to why it never became an option? Legal stuff such as non compete clauses between SMA and Continental since they licensed the TD 300? With the pressure in the market to eliminate leaded gas (and avgas in general since it is considered a boutique product by fuel producers) it seems a diesel (jetA) option would be popular. The rest of the world is making it harder and harder to continue with avgas due to its shrinking availability in Canada, Europe, Africa, etc.

Re: M9 Diesel
A missionary pilot friend for Ethnos 360 operated a SMA diesel C182 in Africa for several years. He gave high marks given they only had one and it competed with a Kodiak. I'll ask Brent what the status on the M9 is.
As far as turbos go, I delivered a new M7 from the factory back in the day and sitting in delivery hangar was a rare M-5 210TC with the Lycoming turbo IO360. I liked it alot. Ray told me then he had taken it up to 18K numerous times and Trued at 230mph/200Kts. Only 11 were built and of those 3 are left on the FAA registry.
I guess you could bolt a Continental TSiO-360 up front, 02 tanks and masks notwithstanding. At 200Kts/10gph 65 gallons goes a long way.
