Re: West Texas
Another great weekend of Texas flying, this is the best time of the year for us.
This is at my Rio Grande River Camp.
First time for anyone to land here, it took a lot of practice on long smooth grass for me to feel comfortable enough to make this landing. I did make a Bounce and Go prior to landing to convince myself I could pull it off. You can see my tracks in the landing.

Re: West Texas
I’m loving it. After looking up the location I like it even more. Wondering how I get my hands on an adjoining piece of property. Your neighbor to the north has a nice 300some odd acres.

Re: West Texas
The properties come up for sale ever so often, it is one of the few places along the Rio Grande with river access.
It is some of the coolest looking country around here. A little barren until you get down into the Rio Grande canyons.

That’s a beautiful spot. Keep me in mind if you hear of something coming up for sale, you have my cell phone.

Re: West Texas
I finally got around to uploading the cockpit videos from last week. These are the same Landing and Takeoff from camp as the previous videos, but from inside the cockpit. I thought y'all might like to see them.

https://youtu.be/nIZqHGEQKOA
In the Takeoff video I moved around to get a few more feet of room. I didn't go back very much farther in fear of chopping down some cat claw.

Re: West Texas
Tell us about your Maule and landing config. Things like: flap setting, VGs, gap seals
You signature tells me you are flying an 1989 M7-235, and from some of your previous pics I can see oleo landing gear.
In the video I can see you are on short final at ~45 mph and carrying 1700-1900 rpm into the flare. Is your manifolc gauge working? Was MP really as low it looks? and fuel pressure?
Thanks for the videos and your previous pics and videos.

Re: West Texas
1989 M7-235 Long Wing (33'8")
IO-540-W1A5D
3 Blade MT
VGs on Wing and under Tail
Gap Seals
Factory Oleo with 31" Bushwheels
Full Flaps in last portion of approach.
MP is correct, and I basically ignore it and RPM, after I'm on final. I will maintain 15" or so until I get my landing point picked out, just to keep the sink rate lower. This landing was flatter than most of my short field, due to the fact that I wanted a little more cushion in case I missed it.
I leave trim in Cruise position for all landings and this Maule, I assume all of them, will stand on it's tail if I abort the landing and give full power. I have to be ready to force the yoke forward.

Re: West Texas
Yes, even with the 180, pressure trimmed out with full flaps on a full-power go around can be a handful.wtxdragger wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 6:29 pmI leave trim in Cruise position for all landings and this Maule, I assume all of them, will stand on it's tail if I abort the landing and give full power. Re: West Texas
Here is the link to the full video of landing at my River Camp.
I thought somebody might want to see my evaluation process before landing such a small tight strip of dirt.

Re: West Texas
His landable distance according to aerials is between 350-400’. Not sure if he cleared anything since the last aerials were shot.
