Scandanavian Hut

The Mountaineering Club of Alaska operates a hut system that includes this one off the Matanuska Glacier (confluence with Scandanavian G.) The "strip" is at 4500' elevation and about 700' below the hut. There is about 400' useable until the big rocks get in the way. It's a one way strip but the approach and departure end is wide open. You aren't committed until on very short final but at that point, you have to decide that you ARE landing! Fall colors, blue skies, and glaciers make a pretty unbeatable combination in my book. That is awesome! I knew the hut was there but I didn't know there was anywhere to land! I must now check it out! You are landing uphill?

The little valley I flew into on the Mt Spurr Glacier is very similar to that with a lateral moraine on one side. It is a little bigger and more forgiving though!

Beautiful photos! Photobucket is free and is a good site to post from but the posted photos are smaller. You usually have to have a .jpg or .png in the photo address string to be able to post photos from the host site.

Those are absolutely amazing photos!

I hope to fly into the Alaskan wilderness to witness the beauty myself someday. Those that live there are truly lucky.

I've used that strip before, but didn't know about the hut. How far is it from the strip?

Amazing photos!

I was just on a glacier in Jasper National Park. I though it was big but it is maybe 1/200 the size of the one in your pictures!
