Alton Bay Ice Runway in New Hampshire is OPEN.

Post by MAU MAU »

Was driving by Alton Bay today (B18) and they were plowing the runway.

It is 100' wide and 2600' long, and they should have the taxiways groomed in the next few days. Aircraft parking is on the south end by the restaurants.

Please call the Alton Bay Ice Runway hotline for the latest updates. 603-875-3498

Landing there is on my aviation bucket list. :D

I doubt I'll ever have the opportunity but I would love it.

I've landed on snow a few times (a few inches or less) with the Maule and with a 182 RG I used to fly. It was a lot of fun. :P

I'm sure ice would be very different, but from what I've read, it's not too hard if you control your touchdown speed and use your feet to keep it straight.

I bet a guy has to apply power gradually during the takeoff run though. Too much 'P' and not enough third wheel traction before the rudder gets up to authority.

I think your right Mountain Doc, I found this picture on the web,(link below) the NTSB claims cause to be to much throttle too fast, too little rudder too late, OUCH!

VG's didn't help there it appears...

Is that a landing gear leg I see alongside the aft fuselage?

Bad sign.

I have never thought of ice as too much of an issue. As long as you have air moving across the rudder, directional control is a non issue no matter what traction is like. Stopping is something else.... Guaranteed to make runup's somewhat of an issue though!
You have to make up your mind about growing up and becoming a pilot. You can't do both!

I guess it would be the same as a runup on a seaplane. You cycle the mags and check carb heat on the initial segment of the takeoff 'roll'

My Wife , and I have been there a few times. Runway in great shape when real cold. When it warms up a bit it gets a little glassy due to the snow banks around the perimeter doesn't allow any run off. They have a full lenth taxiway as well. Have seen all types of airplanes there, and everybody seems to do OK. I did see a Cherokee's nose wheel stuck in a snow bank at the far end one time, but no damage. Great place for a variety of after noon eating places. Lots of snowmobiles on the weekends. They stay clear of the runway, but compete for parking spaces.

Sounds like great fun.

It seems to me a crosswind would be an issue. Even with correct technique once the second main touched down you'd not have friction to stop a downwind drift.

Based on the accident report my theory of 'P' factor seems to be correct.
