GAMI 100UL

Post by andy »

I see that GAMI has received FAA approval to add 611 more engines to its STC for 100UL avgas. Unfortunately, my Lycoming O-360-C1F is not on the list. Does anyone know if there are future plans to add it? I'd also like to know if future AML additions to the STC will cover airframe/engine combinations or only engines. GAMI's website is silent on this and a Google search did not reveal any answers.

Hey Andy, I too sport a 0-360C1F on the pointy end of my M5 and recently queried Maule Flight Inc and AOPA concerning the same. Answer? Neither had the foggiest. MF did inform me the MoGas STC was $2500 and took 8hrs to install. Would like more details on that too...

My next search will be with EAA, they usually get to the bottom of any fuel substitute!
:)

I'll post what I find...

The C1F isn’t on the newly-expanded AML: https://download.aopa.org/advocacy/2021 ... 1635646891

It appears very few of the 180+ hp O-360s variants are approved so far. GAMI intends to keep expanding approvals, but the member’s question would be best answered by GAMI.

Thanks for checking, Smokeyray. It's what I expected but you sometimes get surprised. I decided against the Mogas modification because it's easier for me to get 100LL Avgas where I'm located than to lug around a 5 gallon can of 93UL non-Ethanol Mogas. If I lived far away from an airport, then the Mogas modification would be more useful. I've also read that as octane decreases, so does power. With my 180 hp engine, I need all the power that it can deliver for climbs in the mountains. If I had straight floats, the Mogas modification would be a good strategy to fuel up at a boat marina since they all carry 93UL with no Ethanol around here.

Hey Andy,
Glad to be of service.
The EAA pioneered the MoGas STC back in the 1970's and it's a subject they stay familiar with. That said, I've had a lot of personal fuel experimentation data from my previous T-Craft, RVs and our family 57' C182. In my 65HP TCraft I estimated a 20-30% performance increase at higher altitudes using 100LL either full strength or mixed with MoGas.
My RV4 and 6 (0-320/0-360) even more so. They simply performed better by the numbers using 100LL.
After Ethanol was introduced in MoGas I settled on the idea that Avgas was primary, non ethanol MoGas optional.
Here's a great article on the history of AvGas with Jimmy Doolittle and Shell and how it helped win the Battle of Britain.

I have an O-360C1F on my M4-180V and I have the STC for Swift ul94 avgas. We have it at my airport and it runs great! No fouled plugs or sticky valves. I don't know about the Gami 100 octane but I do know that the Swift fuel ul94 works great in an O-360-C1F. Swift fuels is working on a 100 unleaded too but it is still about a year away I hear. If you buy the STC for the ul94 for $100, you also get any future ones for 100 octane or whatever for free. Just FYI.

Here is the Swift website:

I thought it would be a good time to resurrect this topic on GAMI's G100UL STC because I just bought it online from the GAMI website for my MX-7-180. Cost was $390 with shipping, which includes the new placards. I downloaded the documents for now but the placards and documents will come in the mail. It was more expensive than I thought it would be. I was expecting around $100 for my Lycoming O-360-C1F engine. Now the trick is going to be finding G100UL but at least I'm ready for it. GAMI includes a completed 337 with the documents but it has to be signed and filed with the FAA by an IA. My IA is charging me $125 to do that so the total cost is $515. According to GAMI's website, they are partnered with Avfuel to produce and distribute G100UL - probably to start in 2024 at flight schools. My home airport has contracted with Tital Aviation Fuels for 100LL AVGAS. Titan's website doesn't mention anything about G100UL. My guess is that G100UL will first become available at an airport that has a contract with Avfuel in the form of a dedicated fuel truck leased from Avlease. The closest ones near me that contract with Avfuel are Statesville NC (KSVH) and Lincolnton NC (KIPJ). My guess would be that once they start offering G100UL and sales are enough to attract the attention of other FBOs, then those other FBOs will start talking to their fuel supplier or to Avfuel. That's especially likely if 100LL sales decline as a result. I don't think 100LL sales will stop until it is either banned by EPA or unavailable for economic reasons. Some owners will not want to pay $500+ to buy the STC and they will wait until 100LL isn't available to do that. Should be an interesting transition!
