Garmin GNC250xl replacement

Post by Knoxville »

Brand new member here. It seems that a lot of older Maules were outfitted with the Garmin GNC 250XL GPS/COM. I’m buying one that was equipped with the GNC 430 as well as the 250XL. I would like to keep the 430 but replace the 250XL with something a little more modern. Has anyone with a similar system upgraded?

My last airplane had a 250XL, although not a maule. Since you already have a GPS, I would recommend just upgrading to a simple good comm like a garmin SL40, GTR200, or GTR225. I can't imagine you using the GPS navigator functions on the 250XL when there is another GPS in the airplane. It's a clumsy user interface where the comm and navigation use the same controls, unlike any other modern unit. Since it's already installed with a comm antenna, a swap to another radio would only require fitting the tray and re-pinning the connector.
