Wanting to buy: Advice and input Welcome

Post by Highnoon »

Hello!

I’m a Experimental pilot currently but have always been intrigued by the Maule design.
Current plane is a short couple 80Hp tailwheel.

Wondering what the most common “was tech out for this”
Or
“Make sure you get a plane that is......”
When it comes to the Maule aircraft.
I’m hoping to buy before spring 2021 while interest rates are low........
budget wise it looks like 70’s models are where I’m at.

Thanks in advance!!!!
Looking forward to the input and possibly the entertainment.

Highnoon. Shane.

There's a huge number of threads on this forum that address your questions so there's no way to put all the information into one post. Use the forum's search engine for specific topics. Here's my short list but others have different lists:
  1. 235 hp or 260 hp engine if you can afford it
  2. Fuel injection
  3. Constant speed prop
  4. Universal wing
  5. Vortex generators
  6. Elevator gap seals
  7. Alaskan Bushwheels Heavy Duty extended main gear
  8. Alaskan Bushwheels tail wheel and tail spring
  9. Dual puck brakes and flexible stainless steel brake lines
  10. 26" or larger tires
  11. Dual Garmin G5 PFD and HSI or glass panel
  12. ADS-B In/Out
  13. IFR WAAS GPS
  14. Engine analyzer with fuel flow and totalizer
There are lots of other desirable features but these are the ones that immediately come to mind. A lot of owners like the M4-220, M6-235, M7-235 and M7-260. I have a MX-7-180 with a 180 hp Lycoming engine. There are some advantages and disadvantages to the 180 hp engines depending on your intended operations. Main advantages: less expensive to buy and maintain; higher useful load; more fuel efficient. Main disadvantages: longer takeoff distance when heavily loaded; slower climb rate when heavily loaded. The MX series has a lower ceiling in the rear seat than the M7 series, which matters if you have tall passengers in the rear seat. I assume that you are looking for a tail dragger. Insurance is very expensive unless you have a lot of time in make/model. Nose wheel models are much less expensive to insure. Get a good pre-purchase inspection by an unbiased A&P who knows Maules before you buy one.
