Brake Calipers for 31 inch bushwheels

Post by peterpan »

Hi there, am new to the site and not sure if this has been discussed prior;

I am rebuilding a 1973MaulM4 and why its in bits and pieces am intending to do some mods to suit it for the intended flying.

We have a lot of sand and dunes, landing areas are not short but they often soft. As such I was planning on fitting 31 inch tires to the standard rims with standard single piston 'standard' brakes.

I have heard that many guys up north have dual piston brakes on the 31 inch tires , is this absolutely necessary or would the standard brakes work ?

The standard brakes with 1/4" rotors will work with the 31" tundra tires but you'll have to apply a lot more force. That might eventually bend the rods on hydraulic cylinders. I'd recommend the dual puck brakes and 3/8" rotors.

I'll second that.
Too much force with single pucks. Single is only just adequate for 8.50x6 which have much less torque.
If the pushrods don't bend (especially old style ribbed ones) then the master cylinder mounting tabs will crack the weld.

I opted for the Airframes wheel and caliper kit after messing around trying to save some change. Change it all out in one swap and enjoy, not worth the headaches.

copy - does make sense , will get the kit from AB and minimise any ‘headaches’ !

bit of a pitty as i have just spent a week rebuilding,painting the original standard calipers together with new brake pads and brake discs.... :cry:

MOG - you referring to the ABI-199-62 kit correct ?

Yep, beautiful set of parts. All easy bolt on parts and fit perfectly.

Doesn't the STC require double puck brakes?
