Insurance went up this year :-(

Post by Chris in Milwaukee »

My agent tells me that US Specialty has made “underwriting changes that affect the type of aircraft haveâ€￾ and that “the premiums for this renewal offer are increased from what paid last year.â€￾ Premiums are going up about $400 if I choose to stay with USS. She was able to score me better rates with better coverage from AIG this year at about $1750 with higher medical coverage, no deductibles, and fewer restrictions.

An unfortunate jump, but I’m still pleased with the rates compared to what it could be from other quotes I’ve received in the past. Just a heads up if you’re a USS customer. But maybe it’s just me.

I just switched to another broker under US Specialty because I moved. Not up for renewal until September, so hopefully that comes back down.

Get a quote from Duncan, they seemed reasonable to me. http://www.airduncan.com/
I can't remember if I fired six shots, or only five.....

My broker gets quotes from about 2 - 3 underwriters every year and AIG has always been the best rate so that's who I've been with for many years. They also cover off-airport landings, which is really important to me. It's usually around $1,900 for $120,000 worth of hull value. It helps when you go over 500 hours in make/model.

I love my agent, and she bends over backwards shopping for me. Although I don’t have the experience you guys have, I presume they’re all shopping the same underwriters. I’ll be going with AIG this year.

Looking forward to another year of adventure. Starting year 3 of Maule ownership. No complaints so far except for yoke in the knees.

I second recommendation for Duncan. Angelia takes care of both my aircraft (M5, C180), plus several more on the field. Great folks, who know Maules and taildraggers well.

I'm up for renewal in March, and am shopping around. Granted, I'm a low-hours pilot (~165 TT) with about a hundred of that in TW, and 50 in the Maule (M5-180C), but I'm really hoping for a decent improvement over last year's rate, when I had 0 Maule hours. It was over $4000 for an 80k hull value. That's with a perfect driving record, gainfully employed, good credit, no DUII/convictions, etc.

Thanks for the tip on Duncan, just emailed them for a quote.

Ouch, you need to look for someone that uses US Specialty. My initial Maule insurance a couple years ago (~100TT, 5TW Maule) was about $1400 for a 65k hull.

My US Specialty policy is the one that went up this year. Started at $1450 and stayed that way for two years. It went up $400 this year for some reason. At least my experience must have been good for AIG since they beat USS this year. So off I go.

If your broker has not submitted a request to Global, either a) have them do it or be go to another broker and have them do it. As long as broker A has not contacted Global you can get a quote.

I have been satisfied with them over the years.

You are welcome, they have impressed me a couple of times. Did you save enough to buy a couple of burgers?
