Maule crash....2nd in 13 months for same pilot

Post by Stinger »

Saw the link to a guy in Kansas that has now, in the span of 13 months, wrecked two different M5 planes.

I don't know anything more than the report, and am just thinking the guy is unlucky (or lucky for no injuries both times) to have done this twice now.

I guess he needs to stick to airports for a while.

Those Maules were pretty crashed indeed. I'm glad to see no fatalities. I think the Maules 4130 fuselage/'roll cage' is a good safety feature.

I was thinking a motorcycle or a bus might be a viable option.

I don’t know, seems impervious to personal body damage. Just hard on the Maules. Motorcycles are cheap and down by affect our insurance metric ðŸ˜￾

He seems to be on a one man campaign to thin out the Maule fleet... and drive up our insurance rates. If any one of us gets approached by someone of his combination of names to sell aircraft to, run the other way. It doesn't appear that he learns from any of his experiences.

At least he has good taste in aircraft...

1. I'm glad nobody got killed.

2. I wonder if he has any parts for sale?
I can't remember if I fired six shots, or only five.....

I’m inclined to cut Mr Scot a bit of slack - there but for the grace of God, and all that...

In a few hundred hours flying a short wing Maule I’ve experienced a couple of near-incidents on take off where a sudden side gust lifted the windward wing to an extent that the ailerons could not counteract. It can happen too fast to react, so I guess the trick is to anticipate, which is sometimes easier said than done.

Of course, when the wind is gusting and unpredictable it helps to have a bit more “runwayâ€￾ width than the average road...

Thankfully nobody hurt, and the factory can always build more airplanes.

I talked to him. He is ok, and rebuilding both planes with parts from the Maule factory. He also mentioned a time has come to reflect on his acceptable minimum standards of flying, in particular using roads as runways.
