Maule models naming

Post by Stinger »

Something I've wondered for a while now:
All the Maule models have cool sounding names like Star Rocket, Comet, Orion, etc....but then there's the MX7-160 and 180A that are Sportplane....just doesn't seem to be in the same category as the others.

I consider myself lucky when I talk to a controller that even knows what a Maule is....and that's taking into account that I'm a controller and talk on the radio to people I know.
If I had the 180B, I'd be calling myself Star Rocket all the time!

Well, I'd say "Sportplane" is about appropriate for 160hp. ;-)

But giving both the 160hp and the 180hp the same name? What's up with that?

Heck, I live in Alaska where there a bunch of Maules and still get called Cessna or Piper by controllers. I have never heard anyone differentiate between models on the radio. A Maule is a Maule is a Maule as far as they are concerned.
You have to make up your mind about growing up and becoming a pilot. You can't do both!
