Watch the yoke movement in this landing. He initiates left input, the right wing goes up and if it had been a taildragger...bye bye.

Hey Brian, we've got the message - you want to get us all frit so we'll come and trade our nasty spiteful Maules for the pile of sweet docile CessPipas which you just happen to have in back of your hangar/paddling pool? Nice try.

Now, probably clutching at straws, but do the Maule stats look any better when filtered for fatal/non-fatal? I mean, statistically we're all crap at landing, but are we any better at avoiding PUI, stall/spin and CFIT? And before we do FIT, do we mostly have the presence of mind to grab some flap and slow down so it won't hurt too bad?

Some of the accidents I have seen up here support my thoughts. These things are very safe.
Hence my initial scepticism of Brian's statement "as a matter of fact if a guy or girl is going to crash as cessna during landing or a Piper Cherokee during landing he shall kill himself in a maule with the same conditions"!

Guys!!! there are a couple of realities involved in flying a Maule.
1. It takes attention to detail, you have to pay attention
2. preferably you should have your finger out your arse when you land the plane
3. she is a handful in a x wind
4. you have to be rudder literate.

if you dont adhere to these rules in a Cessna/piper/whatever you might be forgiven, but not in a Maule.
adhere to the rules and you will do things and go places the sofa planes can only dream off.

my particular plane has its own personality, i.e. be careful of the stall, she drops the left wing violently, and so has each Maule its own personality, even when flying the same model. That is why I fly one, I enjoy the adventure

It seems to me, at least in part, the disagreement is because 2 different but related things are being discussed as one.

One issue is the relative safety of the Maule where it crashes with the same force as another brand.

The other issue is point that if flown and landed the same way as the Docile-aire brand competition, the Maule is less forgiving, and more prone to crack up.

Correct me if wrong, but I think Brian's contributions regarding the 2nd point are sometime being also heard as arguing against the first point.

I ground looped the Maule spectacularly and walked away
I crashed a Cessna spectacularly and walked away
I crashed a Chieftain spectacularly and walked away.

I think all these planes appears to be equally safe in a crash

David I see your point what I'm trying to say is that if you wreck a Cessna then you're really going to wreck a maule in the same or less conditions. Statistically from what I can find there are more deaths in the maule crashes than in Cessna crashes.however those deaths are normally the results of a catastrophic crash. What I could not find is injury statistics for a given severity of crash.

Before I bought my Maule a few years ago, I went through the NTSB database. What I recall, most Maule accidents were runway excursions on landing. Of the reports that specified, all the excursions were to the left.
