MX-7 Mogas STC?

Post by Mountain Doctor »

Is anyone running Mogas?

I did the math.

It would save me $20.25/hour, or on average $1,518.75/year.

It seems like there are several stations close to the airport that sell ethanol free 91 octane gasoline.

I figure all I'd need is a simple electric transfer pump and pump it out of my Ford Ranger.

The Peterson STC is $360. Is there anything to the 'kit' other than a few decals and paperwork?

Mogas

I have a 2007 MX7-180-B with the Mogas STC. I am looking at starting to use it for the savings and my numbers are similar to yours. Unfortunatley Lycomings Idea of Mogas differs from Pump Fuel. Take a look at this article and then look up document 1070 on the Lycoming web site.

The STC also includes a second fuel pump to be installed to prevent vapor locking.

Complex stuff.

I did not read about a second fuel pump. Is this in addition to the mechanical and electric backup fuel pumps I already have? Plus gravity?

Mogas STC

Yea, there is a second electric pump installed behind the left kick panel in the front by the pilots feet. It runs full time to prevent Vapor lock and has a dedicated breaker. Lycoming has very strict guidelines as to the fuel content as their intent was for FBO's to be carrying it as an alternative as 100LL goes the way of the dodo bird. Of course FBO's make more money on 100LL so it has not appeared yet. A lot of the criteria for the fuel is to prevent vapor lock so I am not sure if the Peterson STC opens up more possibilites for fuel than what Lycoming has specified with the installation of the additional fuel pump. I will be going to the hangar tomorrow to get the STC from my POH and check it out.

Maule Flight owns the STC for the Maule airframe. Give them a call. The cost is fairly high. It took me about 200 flight hours hours to pay out. I have a discussion about it on my web site. http://www.montanabyair.com/Maule_advice.html

Sounds like there is more to the STC than I thought. Still, it would pay for itself pretty fast, especially if the Mogas makes the engine last longer.

You have to buy the STC from Maule flight and it incorporates the Petersen engine STC. $2500 plus fitting, however you do get to remove the existing Dukes boost pump and sell it.
There is ducting and shroud for engine driven pump, duct for gascolator, and two in parallel fuel pumps to fit behind left kick panel.

Thanks!

That's more involved than I though. I think I will burn 100LL until it's unavailable and then convert.

does the Mogas conversion prohibit the use of 100LL. In otherwords, can the converted engine burn BOTH Mogas and 100LL?

I used Mogas for years....until the EPA got in the way....My MX-7-180B has to have high test (Min 91 octane, best I remember) no ethanol. Ran great, didn't foul plugs, but if your fuel caps leak when it sloshes, it leaves a brown stain where it evaporates.

Around Cities where the EPA does smog control (I live close to Nashville) the EPA will not allow no ethanol high test to be sold....I can find 87 and 89 octane no ethanol, but not 91 or 93....so i'm back to 100LL....
